Mountains of Mourne
Country Cottages: Hanna’s Close is one of the last
remaining Clachans or medieval-style small settlements in
Ireland and one of only two in Northern Ireland which holds
a statutory listing. There are seven fine old restored
heritage holiday cottages in the Close and three a short
distance away. All of them nestle near the foot of the
Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland about a mile and a
half northeast of the fishing port of Kilkeel in County
Down. For the visitor, Hanna’s Close provides ideal
vacation accommodation in genuine, traditional, Irish
heritage cottages – but with all the comforts of the present
day.
This award winning community
development provides comfortable self-catering accommodation
in historic surroundings between the Irish Sea and the
Mountains of Mourne, on the banks of the Kilkeel River. It
is within the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,
which is a candidate National Park.

The cottages retain many of
their old features such as wooden and tiled floors, tongued
and grooved ceilings, open stone fireplaces and sash
windows. However, modern comfort has been provided in the
cottages with fully equipped kitchens, central heating and
pine furniture, making them the perfect vacation
destination. No two cottages are the same and each has its
own unique appearance and outlook over the Close and nearby
mountains. It is truly an opportunity to “Holiday in
History” both Natural and Built.
Group Bookings:
The cottages have become
popular with groups of friends and families who wish to
celebrate weddings, anniversaries or family reunions.
Tommy’s Cottage houses
a small collection of artefacts and information relating to
the Close its surroundings and the people who used to live
there. There is a meeting room in Tommy’s, which is
available for use by groups for a small fee.
